You probably know how to find your IP address on a Mac or Windows computer. But do you know how to find your phone's IP address?

Tracing an IP address is a good way to find out where your data packets are going. It'll give you the IP addresses of each device connected to your computer, which you can then use to get. Check 'Show advanced options' and select 'Static' under IP settings. Enter an IP address. Enter 192.168.1.XXX where XXX is any number between 1 and 255. If you get an error saying the IP address is already in use, it's already assigned to another device.

If you don't know how to do this, I will explain it in detail. It makes no difference whether you have an Android or an iPhone.

The Internet Protocol Address (or IP Address) is a unique address that computing devices such as personal computers, tablets, and smartphones use to identify itself and communicate with other devices in the IP network. When you know the IP address for a particular device you have the ability to identify it on your home network as well as the internet.

Each device has two IP addresses which include a global IP address (public IP address) this is how other people on the internet will see any device on your network.

Whether you're using a tablet, a desktop/laptop computer, a phone, or any other device that connects to the internet your global IP address will remain the same.

The other IP address is the private IP address (local IP address) this is used to identify a device on your network.

Only one device can have a particular IP address on a network. However, the same IP address can be used on other private networks as well.

Whenever you check your IP address you will most likely see an IPv4 and IPv6 address.

How To Find Your Phone's IP Address?

First I will tell you how to find your private IP address on your home network on an Android phone.

How To Find The IP Address On Your Android Phone?

To find the IP address on your Android phone, follow the directions below:

Go to Settings then navigate to About phone.

If you're not currently connected to your Wi-Fi network, you should tap its name and sign into the network.

Then you should tap on Status.

Upon doing this you will find your private IP address along with other important network information.

I followed the steps I provided above to find the private IP address on my Samsung Galaxy S8+.

However, the steps will probably be different for you depending on the make and model of your Android phone.

How To Find The IP Address On Your iPhone?

Follow the simple steps below to find the IP address on your iPhone:

Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.

If you're not currently connected to your home network, you should tap it to connect.

Then tap the name of the network to open its options.

Then you will see the IP Address field that's listed under the IPv4 Address header. Then you will notice that the IPv6 Address header has the alternate address for your iPhone directly below it.

How To Find Your Global IP Address?

Now I will tell you how to find your global IP address (public IP address).

Finding your public IP address is easy because there are a number of websites that will instantly show it to you.

Whether you have an Android phone or an iPhone you should open your favorite browser. Then go to one of the public IP sites listed below to find your public IP address.

You will notice that some IP sites also display your ISP name and your location as well. This is due to the fact that your IP address carries this information with it.

You cannot learn someone's name and address from their IP address. However, you can find out the name of the city that they reside in.

Most of the public IP addresses that are displayed on the sites above are dynamic IP addresses.

That means that the IP addresses will change over time or when the device has been restarted.

The device or your entire network will get a new IP address. However, if you have a static IP address it will not change over time like this.

Most people have dynamic public IP addresses because it's easier for your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to manage.

However, if you would like a static IP address you can request it from your ISP, but in most cases, you will have to pay an additional fee for it.

A static IP address isn't necessary unless you are hosting a server that others access.

How Are Global IP Addresses Assigned?

Global IP addresses are assigned dynamically by your router to devices on your network using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

So this means that when you connect new devices to your home Wi-Fi, you will not have to manually assign an IP address and keep track of them.

You have the ability to assign a static IP address via your router and the settings on the devices if you would like to.

However, this is something that should only be done by advanced users because if it's done incorrectly it will cause some serious problems.

How To Hide Your IP Address:

After learning how easy it is to find your IP address and learning that it shows the location of your city.

You may have some concerns about privacy if you do and you would like to hide your public IP address you can do so by using a VPN.

When you connect to the internet through a VPN provider it gives you the ability to route all your traffic through its secure servers.

When this is done, if someone looks up your public IP address it will appear to them that your traffic is coming from a different location.

The VPN makes your IP address much more difficult to track when you're browsing the internet.

Procedure

If the phone is active on the network and provisioned, best practice is to use the IP address already assigned to it.This should be accessible via the phone's Settings menu (look for the Network Status menu).

This will generally also provide you with the Subnet and Gateway info, which you will need to complete the procedure (otherwise, use ipconfig as described below). If this option is available, note the current IP address, Subnet, and Gateway, and proceed to set static IP according to the procedure for your phone.

If the Phone Is Not on the Network or Otherwise Unable to Provide Valid Network Info

It is possible to determine an available IP address using ipconfig on a computer within the same subnet as the phone.

First, determine the available IP address range. Be sure that you do not assign an IP address that is already in use on the network, which will cause conflicts. The range of available IP addresses may be determined via the router (consult manufacturer's documentation). Note the range and continue.

Running ipconfig on a Windows PC

1. Click the Start menu.
2. In Search/Run bar, type cmd or command, then press Enter. The Command Prompt window will open.
   • Alternatively, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
3. In the Command Prompt, type ipconfig or ipconfig/all, then press Enter. This should return the computer's IP address, Subnet, and Default Gateway info.
   • Note: If you were not able to obtain Subnet and Gateway info from the phone itself, do so now.
4. Using the available IP range determined by your router, run a ping command to an address in that range to confirm it is free for use. In the Command Prompt, type: ping [IP address], then press Enter. (Example: ping 192.168.0.200)
   • If you get a Reply from message, then that IP address is already in use on the network (and you should not assign it).
   • If you get the message Request timed out, then the IP address is available for assignment and you may use it.
